Biodiesel Basics: What is Biodiesel and How is it Different from Regular Diesel?

If you own a diesel engine, you may have heard of biodiesel without knowing precisely what it is or how to use it. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from plant-based oils and fats. It can be used in any diesel engine with little or no modifications and can often be used interchangeably with regular diesel fuel. When It All Began

The invention of biodiesel is usually credited to Dr. Rudolf Diesel, who designed the first diesel engine in 1892. However, it wasn't until the early 21st century that biodiesel began to be used on a large scale. In 2002, the European Union set a target for biodiesel use, and since then, biodiesel production has grown rapidly.

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a renewable, clean-burning fuel made from various plant oils and animal fats. Unlike regular diesel, which is derived from petroleum, biodiesel can be produced domestically from crops such as soybeans, canola, and even recycled cooking oil. Because it's made from renewable resources, biodiesel reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other greenhouse gases. Experts say that biodiesel cuts these emissions by an impressive 86%!

How is Biodiesel Made? 

The process of making biodiesel is relatively simple. First, plant-based oils and fats are combined with alcohol to create a chemical reaction called transesterification. This reaction produces glycerin and biodiesel. The glycerin is then separated from the biodiesel, leaving pure biodiesel behind. 

How is Biodiesel Different from Regular Diesel?

In addition to its environmental benefits, biodiesel has a few other advantages over regular diesel. For one thing, it's less likely to gel in cold weather conditions—a significant bonus for winter driving. Biodiesel also lubricates engine parts more effectively than regular diesel, which can prolong the life of your engine. And because it's made from renewable resources, biodiesel is a more sustainable fuel than regular diesel.

Biodiesel can be used in its pure form (100% biodiesel) or blended with regular diesel fuel. Blends usually contain 20% biodiesel and 80% regular diesel (known as a B20 blend). Some newer vehicles can run on blends up to B100, but most engines need a minimum of B5 (5% biodiesel) to avoid warranty problems. 

Biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine with little or no modifications. However, some engines may require new fuel filters since biodiesel tends to be more corrosive than regular diesel.

Biodiesel is also renewable, which means it will never run out the way fossil fuels will.
